Absorbing the Cracklings of My Craft.

This is the last painting for this semesters studio class.  I enjoy reflecting on true learning that happens when you have proper mentors at your side.

Charcoal Sketch.

Compositional sketch prep, 14.75x27" charcoal on paper. Feel good to have my hands covered in charcoal again, it's been a while.  And sometimes after trying to push progression with one medium it's nice to step back and switch it up when needed. 

Egg Continuation.

12x16" oil on panel, Alla Prima. The search for what is real is a delicate one, especially when it is at  times overwhelmed by that which is fake.

Eggs Beginning.

Stumbled upon an old preserved eggshell in the prop closet one night and fell in love with the shape and light that is found in a broken eggshell.  Something about the delicate nature of the object and yet  how long has it been floating around in different parts of the school studio, for me to find it in this beautiful condition. 

Both are 6x6" oil on panel, Alla Prima. 

In the Cards.

9.5x9.5" Oil on panel Alla Prima study.  This was a really enjoyable painting to make from start to finish. I am definitely going to do a series of these very soon, possibly a run of 52?

Tractor sketch

Here is a fun little 4.5x5.5" study. I took a trip up to Bear Lake, and found tons of cool imagery. A portion of which being these really cool old tractors people used for boats and other water toys, what once might have been a serious investment for a farm owner is now being used as a recreational tool. Been thinking of these images a lot lately, more to come soon.

Art-2-Go Show Round 2

So it has been far too long since I have posted anything to this blog.  That doesn't mean that I've stopped painting, the contrary really, it almost seems as though I've been painting too much to blog. But also a new semester has started heavy and other things life, I digress.

I have the opportunity to yet again be a part of the Annual Art-2-Go show at Art Access Gallery in SLC, UT.  It was a blast last year, so I really can't wait to attend again, always a good crowd there on stroll night and I end up meeting some really interesting folks and get caught up in great conversation.  These were the 4 paintings that I put in this year and if you look at the ones I entered just the year previous it is interesting to see the changes made.  Not only in the paint, but things like framing as well, I've learned just how much can happen in the space of 1 year. Plein air update.

First painting completed after the workshop in Helper. Had a lot of fun making this painting, I went to a neighborhood just up the road from mine. The fact that I painted around 7 p.m. there were plenty of people out and about that came to chat. Shout out to the Satterthwaites for their interest and support.

Doug Braithwaite Helper Workshop!

I took the incredible opportunity to be a part of this years Helper workshop with local master painter Doug Braithwaite. (link to his page upper right) The trip started on monday afternoon and went until mid day saturday. Basically just eating, sleeping (very little), painting, talking painting, and more painting! Doug did an awe-inspiring demo just about everyday, each time bestowing a bit more knowledge and example on what we could learn to improve. The main focus being that of painting plein air, specifically the landscape of Helper, Utah (which has too many things that would fit in a great painting, such rugged beauty). This worked out to be the perfect situation, because painting plein air was something I was focusing on this summer already, but having a tough time with a number of things doing it on my own. If you ever have the chance to take a workshop from Doug I wouldn't hesitate one second, as I myself will definitely being doing whatever I can in the future to learn from him. His wealth of knowledge and down to earth pragmatics are priceless.  

All of the paintings posted are mine from the workshop (except the pics above of Doug at his easel doing a demo), and although they are not all close to being real refined, each has it's own special moment of important notes I take away from this workshop.

First spot, first underpainting.

Second morning spot. 

This moment was the calm before the storm. Unfortunately the painting from this session cannot be pictured here as it was sand blasted (literally) about 10 min after this photo was taken, when a desert storm rolled through and forced us inside and added some 'grit' to our paints, and our painting spirit.

This gorgeous vista was an especially great spot that I feel like I could spend a whole summer just painting from there and still not capture all of the great compositions and incredible lighting that was happening within the whole 360 degree view.  The time when we were up there painting there was all sorts of desert thunderstorms swirling in the distance.

The painting made from this session also didn't make it on the blog, when I was driving back there was a shift of things that scraped the wet paint, and besides it was just a quick 45 min color study anyway.

This was one of my favorite moments of the trip! I had set up in another spot but it started raining, so I improvised a bit and had an absolute blast!

As you can hopefully see from this image, the light allowing me to see what I was doing on my palette was limited....

Tough challenge to set up and paint a wall of rock, but fun none the less.

This was actually the first nocturne I started.  But went back a couple times to get to this finished product. This one holds a lot of 'liner notes'. Also a few good stories, things I couldn't make up, cats, ghosts, brave friends, acknowledgement, schizophrenics, and great fun. Pull me aside in a gallery someday and i'll tell you all about it!

 This was the spot that we set up the last two sessions, I chose to do the bigger panel for the sake of the composition I was hoping to capture but also as a sort of 'final' to cap off the week. Pretty stoked on this one too, very different from anything i've done and that is a great thing. I've gained such a momentum from the time spent within this short week down in a great town, with great people. I have noticed that each time I go down there it seems like I come away with a greater love for the action of painting, but also really great friendships made/strengthened.

Plein air progress report 1.

My newest challenge is to paint plein air everyday, currently i'm painting from 7:30-8:45pm. I have plans for a number of locations but so far the most conducive is from the rooftop of my home. This is the first attempt, 8x10" oil on panel, more progress to come.

300 Plate Show

I had the pleasure of being a part of the annual Art Access Gallery 300 Plate Show this year. With the nature of the show these are all 10x11" oil on panel. It was a great time, not only the opening reception, but especially the time and space that I found myself in while creating these works is pretty special to me. I'm glad to know they are going to good homes. Can't wait to do it again next year!
